Harvest Lark Company... built on a Foundation of Respect

Respect is at the heart of what we do. Respect for the land...for the past...for our neighbors. And, for excellence. Indeed, respect spurs our desire to meet the highest expectations of our customers.

The company’s beginnings are as humble as the underlying principles that guide it today. Cheryl Zumbrunn, a Kansas-born-and-raised farm wife and mother, simply wanted to bring her Midwest farm heritage alive for others to enjoy. The love of this storied prairie and the crops her family raised for decades inspired Cheryl to create a product that busy people everywhere can enjoy. Her original cereal bars - a treat baked with loving care in her farmhouse kitchen - provided her family with an easy, wholesome snack as they went about the busy routines of the farm. So, what started in 2004 as promotion of the area’s historical wheat evolved into a full-scale, hands-on bakery producing a healthy, good-tasting snack food.

Actually, the beginnings trace back to Russian Mennonite immigrants who brought a hardy variety of wheat - known as Turkey Red - to Kansas in 1874. Harvest Lark Company continues this tradition...raising Turkey Red wheat from seeds that first came to this area 134 years ago. The high-production wheat varieties that grow in waves across our fair state are bred from the best qualities of Turkey Red. As a result, Kansas claims its place as the nation’s leading grower of wheat. Indeed, this original winter wheat strain that once sustained generations of pioneer Kansas farmers, today provides the genetic basis for our nation’s most highly exported wheat and flour.

Cheryl, captivated by the potential for a modern food product based on a staple of the pioneer American diet, began testing recipes using Turkey Red, hard white, and hard red winter wheat. Further, she discovered that the market for so-called nutritional bars among today’s active and convenience-minded society eclipsed $2 billion in annual sales. And, yet, the market seemed flooded by me-too bars that mostly failed to satisfy consumers. Among the hundreds, possibly thousands of choices, how could there be so few tasty whole grain bars that blended nutrition, convenience and down-home wholesomeness?

Somehow, it seems fitting that the answer - a great tasting whole grain bar that is healthy, convenient and satisfying - would come from a working farm in Kansas...America’s heartland. We are proud of our Kansas heritage and its pioneering spirit. In that spirit, we offer these delicious snacks for you and your loved ones. We are committed to provide you with the very best products possible...Harvest Lark Natural Bakery Bars and Lark Snack Mixes. Whole grains and natural ingredients, grown in the heartland...so you can feel good about feeding your body and soul. We simply ask that you taste and see for yourself.
